[LDAP-interop] german umlauts in passwords pam_ldap / AD

Hi list readers,

I have a problem with german umlauts in passwords, when doing ldap binds 
from pam_ldap to our Active Directory. Everything is working fine without 
the umlauts.

I have been googling around for a while now and there is one thread that 
seems to match my problem but I cannot follow the mentioned steps there.

As far as I understood I shall do

echo <umlaut_password> | base64 -d | iconv -d UTF-8

and use the result like so

ldapsearch -x -w 'result_string' 

As it didn't work I obviously do something wrong. Can someone help me?
